CoxHealth Teams Up With Kohl's To Combat Childhood Obesity ...

From Ozarks First?..

CoxHealth has received a $45,000 grant from Kohl?s to teach children about heart health.

On Tuesday, students at Pleasant View Elementary School in Springfield attended an assembly to learn about the importance of eating well and being active.

According to CoxHealth, 45 percent of children in the Springfield area are overweight or at risk of being overweight ? and 48 percent are at risk for high blood pressure.

?That?s something that we hope for is that after the kids hear about how to keep a healthy heart with our Kohl?s CARDIAC Kids program that they will want to go home and tell their parents on how to stay healthy and be healthy,? says Lauren Holland with CoxHealth.

Missouri ranks 13th in the nation for obese children and adolescents with 16 percent considered obese.

The Kohl?s CARDIAC Kids program started last year with a grant from Kohl?s. The program will continue reaching out to children ages 5-18 and their families with school- and community-based events that teach participants about living a healthy life.

In its first year, the Kohl?s CARDIAC Kids program reached 2,600 children in the Springfield area.
