Reunions, birthdays, parties planned around Rome parade

For many of the hundreds of families that lined North James Street for Saturday?s Honor America Days parade, it was all about tradition.

Whether they were donned in red, white and blue, silly wigs, or plain old summer fare, everyone seemed to have a ritual in place to celebrate the annual event, now in its 30th year.

Lori Szaraz, was surrounded by family members as she sat in her lawn chair making baby booties for her 3-month old granddaughter. While she now lives in Vernon, she still gathers at her sister?s house to take in the parade and revel in the day?s festivities.

?I?ve been to every one since it started,? Szaraz said. ?It?s a big day for our family. After the parade we have a picnic and go swimming. Then we head over to the symphony and watch the fireworks.?

For Lillian DeAngelo, Saturday?s celebration is the highlight of the summer.

The Syracuse native, who now lives on Oak Street, was introduced to Honor America Days by her husband, a Rome native.

?We would drive in every year from Syracuse before we moved here, and have been to every one since,? the mother of three said. ?We even plan my son?s birthday party to go along with it.?

Camped out in front of her uncle?s house with about 15 relatives was Kristy Bird Beasley, who despite moving to Delaware nearly 20 years ago, makes it a point to head back home to Rome every year for the Honor America Days celebration.

?It?s like one big happy family reunion,? Bird Beasley said adding some traveled from as far away as Colorado. ?There?s no place like home, and there?s no place like Rome.?
