Now I have to say that I'm not exactly in the realms of ancientness yet, but even I remember the good old days when things didn't make noise or demand instant attention. If a letter arrived in the mail box the door didn't DING! at me, If I didn't answer a phone call because I was too far away from the phone I didn't get an instant PING! announcing a new message that must be listened too immediately or the Ting! Ting! Ting! of friend or family member then texting me whatever vital message needed to be communicated. There were no walls in my house where everyone I knew could see if I was in the room or not and immediately transmit a message that popped up on the wall right in front of my eyes regardless of what else I was attempting to do at that particular moment, assuming that I was there and could and WOULD answer them immediately, and customers waited until a shop was open before attempting to ask the sales associates a question.

It's a different world alright and it's a world that makes it increasingly hard to focus and really get things done.

I don't know about you but I run a home based business. This means that I don't have structured hours that I work. Some days I work from the moment I get up until one or two in the morning, other days I might spend the day with friends and then work all evening long. In conclusion and the point I've been leading up to is this. I recently challenged myself to upload listings for an hour. For just one hour I was not going to look at facebook when it pinged at me, I wasn't going to read an email or answer a phone call. In that time I managed to upload 20 prepared listings to two of my shops online. 20! Usually that would take me half of the day. Four or five hours. Here I was and I'd done it in an hour! That left me 3 or 4 hours to get something else done or just sit back with my knitting and do something for me. Wow! I thought, I need to do that more often. So here I am being distracted writing a blog, but when I'm not I set myself goals; Small chunks of work that I can complete in an insignificant amount of time, and for that time I set the rest of the world aside. I can read the emails and texts later, respond to them all at once and again save time. My business is improving but my personal life is too.

In two days this week, the Spanish stock market fell a staggering 12%. Why?

The Bank of Spain confirmed this week what everyone already knew: that gross domestic product (GDP) contracted at a 0.4% rate in the first quarter of 2012. And although the numbers are not available for the second quarter, we know the recession worsened from the first quarter. Estimates show that GDP contracted by 1.0% in the second quarter for Spain, with more austerity measures to come.

This contraction is forcing home prices to fall further in Spain. As I?ve been detailing, dear reader, the Spanish banks are saddled with mortgage debt. That debt continues to lose value, because home prices continue to fall, further exacerbating the credit crisis.

Home prices in Spain have fallen 30% since 2008, but they have fallen another 12.8% just in the first quarter of 2012!

Since GDP growth in Spain contracted by more in the second quarter, we can assume with certainty that home prices continued to fall, making debt at the Spanish banks worth that much less, inflaming the credit crisis.

This is why the 100 billion euros in bailout money for Spain is not going to be enough to cover the bad mortgage-backed securities. The market knows this, which is why the credit crisis has reignited.

To add to the problem, Spain?s regions?equivalent to states here in the U.S.?are asking for 15 billion euros in bailout money from the Bank of Spain, because they have run out of funds.

We complain here in the U.S. about the ?fiscal cliff? at the end of the year, which will amount to three to four percent of GDP; but what about Spain, with almost 25% unemployment, a recession with contracting GDP, and austerity measures that will subtract another 10% from its economy? No wonder Spain?s credit crisis is front-and-center.

When investors saw this earlier this week, they sold Spanish bonds, which sent Spanish interest rates to record highs!

Investors understand that there is no way Spain can make good on its debts because tax revenue will continue to fall with the ongoing recession and austerity measures. Welcome to the next round of the credit crisis.

Certainly Europe, especially Germany, must make demands on Spain for the money they lend the country, but austerity measures to the degree Germany is asking are not livable for the people of Spain. The economy needs some kind of boost. Spain looks like it is guaranteed a depression right now; forget recession! (See: ?Economic Situation in Spain Reaches Catastrophic Level.?)

The European credit crisis once again takes center stage. The European leaders must do something and soon or a Spanish bank will go bankrupt. My guess is more money printing is on the way. If they don?t print money and a Spanish bank goes bankrupt, dear reader, hold on tight, because all hell is going to break loose?and that?s why they will print!

Where the Market Stands; Where it?s Headed:

Yesterday marked the third day in a row the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost more than 100 points. Not a fun time to be an investor. But I will let you in on a little secret?it?s going to get much worse!

The home-building industry continues to dig out of its slump as the pace of construction posts big jumps for single-family and multifamily houses.?Builders had a level of starts in June not seen since October 2008, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday.

Housing starts in June soared 6.9 percent, reaching a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 760,000 units. Broken down, single-family home construction, which makes up the largest segment of those new housing starts, increased 4.7 percent in June. Multifamily housing starts, considered a volatile segment of the market, jumped 12.8 percent last month.

Housing starts were nearly 24 percent higher in June compared to last year at that time.

?Housing continues to be the one sector of the U.S. economy that is outperforming expectations,? Michael Gapen, an economist at Barclays, told Reuters.

Still, while housing starts posted a big leap in June, new housing permits ? a gauge of future building ? dropped 3.7 percent in June.

Fear prompts gun sales, panic after Colo. massacre

DENVER (AP) ? Firearms sales are surging in the wake of the Colorado movie theater massacre as buyers express fears that anti-gun politicians may use the shootings to seek new restrictions on owning weapons.

In Colorado, the site of Friday's shooting that killed 12 and injured dozens of others, gun sales jumped in the three days that followed. The state approved background checks for 2,887 people who wanted to purchase a firearm ? 25 percent more than the average Friday to Sunday period in 2012 and 43 percent more than the same interval the week prior.

Dick Rutan, owner of Gunners Den in suburban Arvada, Colo., said requests for concealed-weapon training certification "are off the hook." His four-hour course in gun safety, required for certification for a concealed-weapons permit in Colorado, has drawn double the interest since Friday.

"What they're saying is: They want to have a chance. They want to have the ability to protect themselves and their families if they are in a situation like what happened in the movie theater," Rutan said.

Day-to-day gun sales frequently fluctuate, but the numbers also look strong outside of Colorado, too.

Seattle's home county, King, saw nearly twice as many requests for concealed pistol licenses than the same timeframe a year ago. Florida recorded 2,386 background checks on Friday, up 14 percent from the week before. Oregon sales on Friday and Saturday were up 11 percent over the month prior. Four days of checks in California were up 10 percent month-to-month.

During the past decade, June and July have consistently been the slowest months for gun sales, according to FBI data.

Jay Wallace, who owns Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna, Ga., found that his sales on Saturday were up 300 percent from the same day a year ago ? making it one of the best Saturdays his business has ever had. He said customers are often afraid when there's a gun-related tragedy that some lawmakers might try and push through an anti-gun agenda.

"We shouldn't let one sick individual make us forget and lose sight of freedoms in this country," Wallace said.

Authorities have said that the suspected Colorado shooter, James Holmes, methodically stockpiled weapons and explosives at work and home in recent months. He purchased thousands of rounds of ammunition and a shotgun, a semi-automatic rifle and two Glock pistols, authorities said.

On Friday, clad in head-to-toe combat gear, he burst into a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises," tossed gas canisters into the crowd and opened fire. The shooting killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others.

Police in the Denver suburb of Aurora say Holmes also booby-trapped his apartment. Holmes is now in solitary confinement at a local jail.

The rise in gun sales reflects but one of the anxieties created by the shootings. Since the massacre, there have been reports of chaos at movie theaters, apparently sparked by misunderstandings or careless words.

A confrontation with an intoxicated man in an Arizona theater caused about 50 people to flee, authorities said. A southern California man was arrested after authorities say he made allusions to the Aurora massacre after the movie didn't start on time. In New Jersey, a showing of "Batman" was canceled after someone stood up during the movie, opened an emergency exit and then returned to their seat.

About 90 minutes into a Monday night showing of "Batman" in Santa Monica, Calif., shrieks from some girls sent about two dozen people sprinting for the exit. It turned out that a large man with a backpack was actually not a threat and was simply having a medical problem.

"This was nothing, and yet it startled us and rattled us so much," said moviegoer Paria Sadighi.

Nationally, the shootings have triggered a fierce debate over gun control and whether government has a role in reining in the ownership of firearms.

Gun sales often fluctuate based on news events, especially whenever people think the passage of more restrictive gun laws is imminent. Sales spiked following the election of President Barack Obama, when weapons enthusiasts expressed fear that the Democrat might curtail gun rights. FBI figures also show background checks for handgun sales jumped in Arizona following the shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in 2011.

"It's not uncommon for us to see spikes in requests for concealed pistol licenses when there's a significant gun-related tragedy," said Sgt. Cindi West of the King County sheriff's office in Washington state.

Some Democratic lawmakers in Congress cited the shooting as evidence of the need for tougher gun control laws ? particularly a ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines. Congress, however, hasn't passed strict legislation in more than a decade, and leaders in Washington show no sign of bringing up such measures any time soon.

London Games set to open in troubled times

LONDON: London, an ancient city steeped in theater and pageantry, stages its third summer Olympics against a somber backdrop tempering the excitement and anticipation before the world?s greatest sports festival.

Euphoria in Singapore, where London secured the Games in 2005, was succeeded within 24 hours by horror in the British capital when 52 commuters were killed by four suicide bombers.

Consequently the Games of the Olympiad, opening at the Olympic stadium in east London on Friday, will feature Britain?s largest peacetime security operation which has further inflated the budget in troubled economic times.

?The security threat comes from a number of diverse actors ranging from Al-Qaeda affiliated terrorists, lone wolves acting independently, Irish Republican Army offshoots as well as anarchists,? said an assessment from the Asia-Pacific Foundation, a London-based think tank.

?Another potential danger is street violence similar to the wild, apparently spontaneous and totally unpredictable riots, that hit parts of London for five days in August 2011, causing hundreds of millions of pounds in property damage.?

London?s creaking transport system, criticized as ?often obsolete? by International Olympic Committee (IOC) inspectors after the city was short-listed for the Games, is another problem.

So, too, is the unpredictable British climate during a summer of unrelieved gloom and drenching rain, although signs that the weather gods may have finally relented came at the weekend with clear skies, rising temperatures and optimistic forecasts.

On the plus side, the Asia-Pacific Foundation report pointed out that Britain has a ?very successful track record? in hosting major sports events, a point stressed by London 2012 Olympics organizing committee chairman Seb Coe.

?You do not want people coming to London feeling they have come to a siege town,? Coe told Reuters. ?London stages these global events all the time and often at the same time. We have a good track record but I am not being remotely cavalier or particularly sanguine about the nature of what we have to do.?

London held the 1908 Olympics at the height of the golden Edwardian summer when Britain ruled much of the world. The 1948 Games were hosted by a city ravaged by wartime bombing in an emotionally and physically exhausted country burdened by a record debt.

In a link with the past, the Olympic Park is located in an area of London which suffered some of the worst bombing in World War II, as part of a program of economic regeneration.

Britain possesses an unparalleled sporting history, stemming from that astounding period in Victorian Britain when the rules for virtually all the games now played throughout the world were either invented or codified.

?We?re coming to a nation that invented modern sport in the second half of the 19th century,? IOC president Jacques Rogge said at Formula One?s British Grand Prix this month.

?We?re also coming to a nation that has included sport in its school curriculum and it?s a nation that loves sport, knows sport, and that will show.?

The Olympic movement has been criticized as bloated, grandiose and in thrall to the sponsors and television companies who provide the money which underpins modern sport.

No credible alternative economic model exists and, even if the IOC ceased to exist, the sports and leisure industries would soon entice the individual federations into new multi-sports commercial ventures.

New clue on how brain processes visual information

ScienceDaily (July 22, 2012) ? Ever wonder how the human brain, which is constantly bombarded with millions of pieces of visual information, can filter out what's unimportant and focus on what's most useful?

The process is known as selective attention and scientists have long debated how it works. But now, researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center have discovered an important clue. Evidence from an animal study, published in the July 22 online edition of the journal Nature Neuroscience, shows that the prefrontal cortex is involved in a previously unknown way.

Two types of attention are utilized in the selective attention process -- bottom up and top down. Bottom-up attention is automatically guided to images that stand out from a background by virtue of color, shape or motion, such as a billboard on a highway. Top-down attention occurs when one's focus is consciously shifted to look for a known target in a visual scene, as when searching for a relative in a crowd.

Traditionally, scientists have believed that separate areas of the brain controlled these two processes, with bottom-up attention occurring in the posterior parietal cortex and top-down attention occurring in the prefrontal cortex.

"Our findings provide insights on the neural mechanisms behind the guidance of attention," said Christos Constantinidis, Ph.D., associate professor of neurobiology and anatomy at Wake Forest Baptist and senior author of the study. "This has implications for conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which affects millions of people worldwide. People with ADHD have difficulty filtering information and focusing attention. Our findings suggest that both the ability to focus attention intentionally and shifting attention to eye-catching but sometimes unimportant stimuli depend on the prefrontal cortex."

In the Wake Forest Baptist study, two monkeys were trained to detect images on a computer screen while activity in both areas of the brain was recorded. The visual display was designed to let one image "pop out" due to its color difference from the background, such as a red circle surrounded by green. To trigger bottom-up attention, neither the identity nor the location of the pop-out image could be predicted before it appeared. The monkeys indicated that they detected the pop-out image by pushing a lever. The neural activity associated with identifying the pop-out images occurred in the prefrontal cortex at the same time as in the posterior parietal cortex. This unexpected finding indicates early involvement of the prefrontal cortex in bottom-up attention, in addition to its known role in top-down attention, and provides new insights into the neural mechanisms of attention.

"We hope that our findings will guide future work targeting attention deficits," Constantinidis said.

The research was supported by the National Eye Institute contract ROI EY016773 and the Tab Williams Family Endowment.

Microsoft's Enterprise Software Is Way Bigger ... - Business Insider

Despite all the attention given to Microsoft's consumer products like Xbox, Bing, and Windows Phone, the company's real moneymaking engine are its varied lines of enterprise software.

And those businesses are booming.

For the first time, the company's Server and Tools business was bigger than Windows. In the fiscal year Microsoft just finished, it saw $18.7 billion in revenue for S&T compared to $18.4 billion for Windows.?

Server and Tools is the division that sells server versions of Windows, database software, Azure cloud services, software-development tools, system-management products and enterprise services.

Now, Windows was far more profitable, at $11.5 billion compared to S&T's $7.4 billion.

But wait, there's more. A lot more.

Microsoft's Business Division, which sells Microsoft Office, is also bigger than Windows this year AND more profitable. It brought in $24 billion in revenue and posted $15.8 billion in operating income.

Those two business units cover more than half of Microsoft's revenues and most of the company's profit. Plus, most of Microsoft's Windows revenues come from businesses, too.

Writer Unboxed ? Marketing Mash-up

I?m in the throws this week of at long last putting the final, finishing touches on The Impossible Book?(insert huge, slightly crazy-eyed sigh of relief here) so my post this month is a bit of a mash-up. Part news bulletin, part platform/marketing advice, part philosophical reflection. Have I scared everyone off yet? Well, if not (and I really don?t hold it against you if so!) a little background:

I think I?ve mentioned before on other WU posts that the relentless cries of Platform! Platform! Platform! in today?s publishing world more or less make me break out in a cold sweat. I am totally in sympathy with everything our own Robin LeFevers says about introverted writers on her Shrinking Violets blog. Of course, part of my platform reluctance is just a simple time thing. My kids are little (5 and 2) and I homeschool them. I just plain do not have the time to both write books I?m proud of and devote huge (or even small to medium size) chunks of my workday to platform-building. And (probably like most WU readers/authors here) when it comes to a choice between marketing and craft, I choose craft every time. I just have to.

But in part it is just about me. Jane Friedman had a great post here awhile back about how any marketing/platform efforts have to be tailored to fit the individual, otherwise they won?t be authentic. What is right for one author simply won?t work for another. And for me . . . I blog here (which I love!) and I have my own website and (really infrequently updated) blog, but apart from that, I just hadn?t yet hit on any marketing strategies that felt both unique and right to me.

However?some of you may remember that about 6 months ago I went the indie-publishing route for my urban fantasy book Demon Hunter and Baby. Which means, of course, that I?m totally responsible for any marketing efforts on its behalf. Now, I?m not generally speaking a huge fan of love triangles, but one just sort of wrote itself into this book. A particular character stepped up and suddenly my heroine?whom I?d thought was absolutely certain to end up with the love interest I?d picked out for her?was torn between two love interests. And so was I. I was starting to think about writing the next book in the series (and thank you so much to anyone who bought a copy of book 1 and made it a viable option to write book 2 in the series!) and trying to sketch out where the series was going and which of the two men Aisling, my heroine, was ultimately going to choose. I didn?t actually reach a conclusion (still haven?t), but one night while going to bed I looked at my husband and said, ?You know what would be fun? A survey on my website where readers could cast their votes about who THEY think Aisling should end up with.?

And because my husband happens to be a) my webmaster and b) AWESOME, by the next morning, I had my survey. And my first responses. Seriously. I had no idea how popular the survey would be when I first floated the idea?it was just for fun, really, just a whim. But literally from the first hour the survey was in place, the responses started flooding in. And suddenly, too, sales on the book took off in a way they hadn?t in the 6 months the book had been out. Which was pretty awesome. Now, was the survey responsible? I have no idea. Does getting to voice their opinions make the book stick in people?s minds, and therefore they recommend it to friends more? I can?t prove it, of course. But the survey was the only factor that changed.

However?and this is where the philosophical reflection part of this blog comes in?the survey has also had an effect that I almost value more than the sales. It?s one of those facts of being an author that I?ll never meet or even know the names of 99% of the readers who encounter my books. Which is cool in its way?I mean, once I release a story into the world, it?s no longer ?mine?, it belongs to readers, not to me. And sure, I get fan mail and reviews and all that. But it?s only a tiny fraction of readers who do e-mail me or write up a review; I don?t get the chance to get feedback from most of my readers. But the survey?based on the number of responses, a pretty high fraction of readers are filling it out, and I have had what may well be the most fun?and also the most thought-provoking?experiences of my whole writing career reading the answers people are providing. First of all, it?s an almost even 50/50 split between Aisling?s two love interests. On any given day, a response will come in with an impassioned (and very convincing) plea that Aisling is 100% ?meant? to be with one of the men. And it will be followed by an equally impassioned, convincing answer that she is 100% ?meant? to be with the other. Two readers read the exact same book and come up with absolutely opposite opinions of the characters. It?s just fascinating to me. And a reminder of why I love books so much. Only half of the reading experience has anything to do with the author. The other half comes from within the reader?and it depends so much on the readers life-experiences and inner life. One of my (many) favorite survey responses was from a single mom, who advocated for the man who is not the father of Aisling?s baby, because she said she liked seeing that love was possible for women even if their relationship with their children?s father had fallen apart.

Anyway, in case there are other introverted, short-of-time writers out there, I just wanted to share my experience. Not that a survey is necessarily going to be right for everyone, of course. But what I really mean to say is that this whole experience has given my more confidence that there ARE marketing solutions out there that will not only work for me (and all of us shrinking-violet types!) but can also deepen and broaden my relationship with readers and my understanding of my craft. And that?s just a total win.

Colon, Rectal Cancers Seem to Be Same Disease - Drugs.com ...

WEDNESDAY July 18, 2012 -- Colon and rectal tumors are the same type of cancer, according to researchers who conducted genetic analyses of cancer tissue specimens.

The researchers, from the Cancer Genome Atlas project, also identified new genetic mutations that may contribute to colorectal cancer.

The findings, published online July 19 in the journal Nature, one day may lead to improved diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer, the researchers said.

In the 224 colorectal cancer specimens analyzed, 24 genes were mutated in a significant number of cases. In addition to genes previously identified as potential "drivers" of colorectal cancer when mutated, the researchers identified three new genes that may also be involved in this disease.

The researchers also identified two other genes that are mutated or "overexpressed" in colorectal cancer and may prove to be potential targets for new drugs.

The National Cancer Institute and the National Human Genome Research Institute, both parts of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, funded the study.

"This finding of the true genetic nature of colon and rectal cancers is an important achievement in our quest to understand the foundations of this disease," Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, said in a government news release. "The data and knowledge gained here have the potential to change the way we diagnose and treat certain cancers."

Dr. Harold Varmus, director of the National Cancer Institute, added, "While it may take years to translate this foundational genetic data on colorectal cancers into new therapeutic strategies and surveillance methods, this genetic information unquestionably will be the springboard for determining what will be useful clinically against colorectal cancers."

More than 143,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer this year and more than 51,000 will die of the disease. Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute.
